To stop this service, open [Command Prompt] (Start>Run>cmd>Enter) and type the following command sc stop wuauserv. This will not prevent Automatic Updates from starting at the next boot. So don't worry, you'll keep getting Windows updates. Just don't forget to restart eventually.

Disabling Windows Update Auto Reboot

For Windows XP Home Edition

• Click the Start button, select Run…
• Type in “regedit” (without the quotes)
• Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Policies \Microsoft\Windows \WindowsUpdate\AU
• Right click and create a new DWORD Value named “NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers” (without the quotes)
• Double-click this new value and set the Value data to 1
• Reboot your computer one last time for the setting to take effect.
